Nicht zuletzt wegen drastisch gestiegener Energiepreise probieren immer mehr Menschen, Holzkohlegrills oder Stromaggregate als alternative Heiz- oder Stromquelle zu nutzen. Das kann tödlich enden. Die Initiative zur Prävention von Kohlenmonoxid-Vergiftungen warnt dringend davor, Grills und Stromaggregate in geschlossenen Räumen zu verwenden. Der Grund: Glühende Holzkohle oder die Verbrennung von Diesel oder Benzin setzen erhebliche Mengen des toxischen Kohlenmonoxids (CO) frei, die selbst bei geöffneten Fenstern, Türen oder dem Garagentor zum Tode führen können. Aber auch auf dem Balkon ist große Vorsicht geboten, denn das Kohlenmonoxid kann in die Wohnung ziehen und dort befindliche Personen vergiften.

Unwissenheit und Leichtsinn verursachen Todesfälle

Immer häufiger berichten Feuerwehren und Rettungsdienste über lebensgefährliche Kohlenmonoxid-Unfälle durch den unvorsichtigen Umgang mit Holzkohlegrills. Die Betroffenen bemerken nicht, dass sie CO einatmen, denn das Gas ist unsichtbar, geruchs- und geschmacklos. „Der Holzkohlegrill ist etwas für einen gemütlichen Abend im Freien und nicht geeignet für die Zubereitung von Grillgut im Innenraum oder als Heizgerät. Meist sind sich die Grillenden der drohenden Gefahr durch eine Kohlenmonoxidvergiftung nicht bewusst und so wird der Grill beispielsweise bei einem Regenschauer oder abendlicher Kälte einfach in die Wohnung gestellt. Das ist lebensgefährlich“, erklärt Hermann Schreck vom Deutschen Feuerwehrverband.

CO-Warnmelder schützen Leben und Gesundheit vor unsichtbarer Gefahr

„Neben den genannten Beispielen gibt es im Alltag eine Vielzahl weiterer Gefahrenquellen, die jederzeit zu einer erhöhten Kohlenmonoxid-Konzentration in Innenräumen führen können. Bei verschmutzen und blockierten Abgasleitungen und Schornsteinen oder unsachgemäßer Kamin- oder Ofennutzung kann ein CO-Melder lebensrettend sein, denn das giftige Gas lässt sich nur durch technische Hilfsmittel aufspüren“, sagt Schreck. CO-Melder überwachen permanent die Umgebungsluft und schlagen bei gesundheitsgefährdenden CO-Konzentrationen Alarm. Die Installation der CO-Melder erfolgt nach Herstellerangaben.
